Like the previous episode, this episode provided a backstory for our hero of the day, Souji aka Kyoryu Green. What I like about the Green of this season is that he is meek and serious as opposed to the usual comic relief Greens of the past years. It changes up the cast for a refreshing but familiar experience. The little match between him and Daigo was a nice way to show the differing personalities in the two. So Souji’s problem was that he was tied down by his father’s wishes instead of finding his own path. He resolved it by combining both his and his father’s technique? Okay, well this isn’t supposed to be overly complicated, so I’m just gonna nod my head. Honestly, Souji’s swordsmanship looked impressive from the start, albeit quite beast-like (but rightfully so).
Speaking of impressive, the fight choreography continues to look impressive. The stunts and wire-fu implementation is done really well, making the unmorphed and morphed fights entertaining and flashy. Zakutor and Kyoryuzin’s Stegotchi + Zakutor combination was pretty standard fare, but I do like that Amy doesn’t have to leave the cockpit and that Dricera was still of use outside the battle. The Deinochaser dinosaurs were also introduced as a pair that, when combined, transform into a motorbike. They seem to have multiples of these, enough for each Kyoryuger to use, so expect more tons of explosions!
I couldn’t help but notice that the Monster of the Week had a police cop motif with chains and spikes that captured its victims in cages. Almost would’ve believed it was BDSM if it weren’t for the wailing skeleton prisoners on the monster. Next week it’s Black’s turn to fully join the team. I’m interested in how he’ll clash with the others due to being such a carefree playboy type of deal.
